If You're Out There

This is the final song for Black History Month. I think it is a good song to show how far African-Americans, and Americans in general, have come in our history. It is a song of hope and change. It calls on everyone to "be the change they want to see".

This song was inspired by the presidential campaign of Barack Obama, and was also used as part of Obama's campaign.

If you hear this message, wherever you stand
I'm calling every woman, calling every man
We're the generation, we can't afford to wait
The future started yesterday and we're already late

We've been looking for a song to sing
Searched for a melody, searched for someone to lead
We've been looking for the world to change
If you feel the same then go on and say

If you're out there, sing along with me
If you're out there, I'm dying to believe
That you're out there, stand up and say it loud
If you're out there, tomorrow's starting now, now, now

No more broken promises, no more call to war
Unless it's love and peace that we're really fighting for
We can destroy hunger, we can conquer hate
Put down the arms and raise your voice
We're joining hands today

Oh, I, I was looking for a song to sing
Searched for a leader but the leader was me
We were looking for the world to change
We can be heroes just go on and say

If you're out there, sing along with me
If you're out there, I'm dying to believe
That you're out there, stand up and say it loud
If you're out there, tomorrow's starting now, now, now
Oh, now, now, now

If you're ready, we can shake the world
Believe again, it starts within
We don't have to wait for destiny
We should be the change that we want to see

If you're out there, oh
If you're out there and you're ready now
Say it loud, scream it out

If you're out there, sing along with me
If you're out there, I'm dying to believe
That you're out there, stand up and say it loud
If you're out there, tomorrow's starting now

If you're out there
If you're out there
If you're out there

If you hear this message, wherever you stand
Calling every woman, calling every man
We're the generation, and we can't afford to wait
The future started yesterday and we're already late

Here is a video by hip hop artist, will.i.am (from the Black Eyed Peas). The words are from a speech by Barack Obama.

It was a creed written into the founding documents
That declared the destiny of a nation, yes we can
It was whispered by slaves and abolitionists
As they blazed a trail toward freedom, yes we can

It was sung by immigrants as they struck out
From distant shores and pioneers who pushed westward
Against an unforgiving wilderness, yes we can

It was the call of workers who organized
Women who reached for the ballots
A President who chose the moon as our new frontier
And a King who took us to the mountaintop
And pointed the way to the Promised Land

Yes we can to justice and equality
Yes we can to opportunity and prosperity
Yes we can heal this nation
Yes we can repair this world
Yes we can

We know the battle ahead will be long
But always remember that no matter
What obstacles stand in our way
Nothing can stand in the way of the power
Of millions of voices calling for change
(We want change)

We have been told we cannot do this by a chorus of cynics
They will only grow louder and more dissonant
We've been asked to pause for a reality check
We've been warned against offering
The people of this nation false hope

But in the unlikely story that is America
There has never been anything false about hope
Now the hopes of the little girl who goes
To a crumbling school in Dillon are the same
As the dreams of the boy who learns on the streets of LA

We will remember that there is something happening in America
That we are not as divided as our politics suggests
That we are one people, we are one nation
And together, we will begin the next great chapter
In the American story with three words that will ring
From coast to coast, from sea to shining sea, yes we can

Change is Gonna Come

This is a classic sung by Sam Cooke (1963). This song reflects the hope of the Civil Rights movement, and also expresses how difficult it was to live under segregation and racism. One of the incidents that inspired this song was when Sam Cooke and his band attempted to register at a "whites only" motel in Louisiana. They were arrested for "disturbing the peace". But the Civil Rights Movement was in progress and people saw signs of hope and change. This is what he sings about.

I was born by the river in a little tent
Oh and just like the river I've been running ever since
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

It's been too hard living but I'm afraid to die
Cause I don't know what's up there beyond the sky
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

I go to the movie and I go downtown somebody keep telling me don't hang around
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

Then I go to my brother
And I say brother help me please
But he winds up knockin' me
Back down on my knees

Ohhhhhhhhh.....

There been times that I thought I couldn't last for long
But now I think I'm able to carry on
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

Gil Scott-Heron

Gil Scott-Heron (1949-2011) was an American soul and jazz poet, musician, and author, known primarily for his work as a spoken word performer in the 1970s and '80s. His collaborative efforts with musician Brian Jackson featured a musical fusion of jazz, blues, and soul, as well as lyrical content concerning social and political issues of the time. He is sometimes called the "Godfather of Rap", but his own term for himself was "bluesologist", which he defined as "a scientist who is concerned with the origin of the blues." His music, most notably on Pieces of a Man and Winter in America in the early 1970s, influenced and helped engender later African-American music genres such as Rap, Hip Hop and Neo Soul.

Here is one of his songs, "The Train from Washington".

During reconstruction time they were folks who had been promised 40 acres and a mule.
And they were told a man with their legal papers could be expected on a train from Washington.
They were folks who waited for him and there are folks who are still waiting for him.
But you can't depend on the train from Washington, it's 100 years overdue

You can depend on the stars and planets yeah
They'll always tell you the truth
You can depend on the 15th of April yeah
Somehow it always gets through
You can depend on the daily paper 'cause
They sure 'nuff bring you the blues
But don't depend on the train from Washington
It's one hundred years overdue

I see people, dragging on their own
I see them standing anxious near the tracks
I see people, a long long way from home
Wondering how they'll ever get back

You can depend on the politicians yeah
Always got a point of view
They are contemporary court magicians yeah
The sleight of mouth will dazzle you
You can depend on a weak position from them
Changes that you've got to go through
But don't depend on the train from Washington
It's one hundred years overdue

I see people, on their way to work
I see factories bursting at the seams
I see people listening for the whistle
On the train that will carry their dreams

I see people, on their way to work
I see factories bursting at the seams
I see people listening for the whistle
On the train that will carry their dreams

You can depend on the folks and gravity
'Cause both of them will bring you down
You can depend on catching something yeah
'Cause something is going around
You can depend on the first two numbers, but
Damn if the last one comes through
But don't depend on the train from Washington
It's one hundred years overdue

You can't depend on the train from Washington
It's one hundred years overdue
Oh lord you see
You can't depend on the train from Washington
It's one hundred years overdue
Don't you over
But don't depend on the train from Washington
Eh eh eh .. eh you know it might not make it
You can't depend on the train from Washington
Everybody knows it's it's running it's running late
You can't depend on the train from Washington
It's one hundred years overdue
It's long long time
You can't depend on the train from Washington
It's one hundred years overdue

Here is another Gil Scott-Heron song called, "Is that Jazz?" He pays tribute to some of the great Jazz musicians of our time.

Basie was never really commonplace
He was always measures ahead.
Ellington was more than number one
For the music and things that he said.
Bird was the word back when tenors were heard
From Kansas right up to the Prez
And Billie was really the Queen of a scene
That keeps echoing on in my head.

What it has will surely last but is that Jazz?

Miles had a style that amazes and raises
The spirits from deep in your soul.
'Trane struck a vein of laughter and pain
Adventures the mind could explore.
Stevie and Bob talk of freedom and 'Jah'
In their own individual ways.
Playing and singing as long as its bringing
A message is all that it says.

What is has will surely last but is that Jazz?

We overanaylze we let others define
A thousand precious feelings from our past.
When we express love and tenderness
Is that Jazz? Is that Jazz? Is that Jazz? Is that Jazz?
Dizzy's been busy while Grover gets us over
With notes that go straight to the heart.
Brother Ron gets it on with a bassline so strong
That the sounds seem to glow in the dark.
I take pride in what's mine - is that really a crime -
When you know I ain't got nothing else?
Only millions of sounds picks me up when I'm down;
Let me salvage a piece of myself.

What it has will surely last but is that Jazz?

This is a remake of a song originally recorded by Marvin Gaye, "Inner City Blues". Gil Scott-Heron added a spoken word poem, "The Siege of New Orleans" to the song to make it his own.

Rockets and moon shots
And blame it on the have-nots
Money, we made it
Even before we see it, they’ll take it

Yeah, make you wanna holler right on
The way they do your life
Make you wanna holler right on
The way they do your life

Inflation means there ain’t no chance
To increase a little bit of finance
Bills they go up pile up the sky
Send that boy of to die

Yeah, make you wanna holler right on
The way they do your life
Make you wanna holler right on
The way they do your life

Hang ups and let downs
And Bad breaks and set backs
The natural, natural fact is
And baby, I can’t pay those taxes

Yeah, make me wanna holler sometime
And throw up both of my hands
And make me wanna holler sometime
And throw up both my hands

So you say you never heard of the ‘Inner City Blues’
And what’s more you don’t understand it all
What the ghetto folks mean about ‘living behind walls’?
Then put on your best suit, white shirt and tie
And run on downtown to stand in line
For a job washing dishes but you may not qualify.
Walk a big hole in a new pair of shoes
And you’ve had your first look at the ‘Inner City Blues’.
Go looking for a place to live but all the while
Beware of what’s lurking behind the devil’s smile.
Are we stupid or just naive that we continues to believe
Money can buy us anything
Including a slice of ‘the American Dream’?
Yeah, answer ads in the paper about ‘houses for sale’
And get treated like Charles Manson out on bail
When you start to get frustrated by the tactics they use
You'll recognize that, feeling
It's the ‘Inner City Blues’
Yeah make you wanna holler sometimes
And throw up both your hands

And haven’t you ever wondered about
Why some brothers and sisters were down and out?
Receiving their sympathy from a bottle of wine
Or worse yet ‘old homicide’
Living their lives in a glassine bag
While praising the mysteries of terminal scag?
Some of our brothers are on parading in drag?
Another set of victims to what you choose
Yeah you can recognize that, that's the inner city blues
Makes you want to holler sometimes and throw up both your hands

To see sweet sisters, blossoms of our African tree
Profiling on the corner, talking 'bout ten and three
Because in spite of all the money we made and taxes we paid
The woman was looking at hungry days and some decisions had to be made
Would you tell her it's better to go to your grave as a slave to a minimum wage
Well, I hardly think so, but makes you want to holler
And throw up both your hands

And what happens when people start to think they have nothing to lose
Nothing to lose

Did you ever hear about Mark Essex and the things that made him choose to fight the inner city blues
Yeah, Essex took to the rooftops guerilla style and watched while all the crackers went wild
Brought in 600 troops, brand new I hear, to see them crushed with fear
Essex fought back with a thousand rounds and New Orleans was a changing town
Rat a tat tat tat was the only sound, yeah
Bring on the stone rifles to knock down walls
Bring on the elephant guns
Bring on the helicopters to block out the sun
Yeah, made the devil wanna holler cause 8 was dead and a dozen was down
Cries for freedom were a brand new sound
New York, Chicago, Frisco, LA
Justice was served and the unjust were afraid
Because in spite of all the years and all the fears
Brothers were alive to courage found and spreading them goddamn rules around
Yeah, make you wanna holler black people and hold up both your hands and say
Liberation!

Crime is increasing
And trigger happy policing
Panic is panic is spreading
And Lord knows where I'm heading
Make you wanna holler sometimes
Throw up both your hands
Make you wanna holler sometimes
And throw up both your hands

I Will Survive

Here is the 1978 classic Disco anthem, "I Will Survive", performed by Gloria Gaynor

At first I was afraid, I was petrified
Kept thinking I could never live without you by my side
But then I spent so many nights thinking how you did me wrong
And I grew strong
And I learned how to get along
And so you're back from outer space
I just walked in to find you here with that sad look upon your face
I should have changed that stupid lock
I should have made you leave your key
If I'd have known for just one second you'd back to bother me

Go on now go, walk out the door
Just turn around now 'cause you're not welcome anymore
Weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye?
Do you think I'd crumble? Did you think I'd lay down and die?
Oh no, not I. I will survive
Oh as long as I know how to love, I know I'll stay alive
I've got all my life to live, I've got all my love to give and I'll survive
I will survive, hey, hey!

It took all the strength I had not to fall apart
Kept trying hard to mend the pieces of my broken heart
And I spent oh so many nights just feeling sorry for myself, I used to cry
But now I hold my head up high
And you see me, somebody new
I'm not that chained up little person still in love with you
And so you felt like dropping in and just expect me to be free
Now I'm saving all my lovin' for someone who's loving me

Go on now, go walk out the door
Just turn around now ‘cause you're not welcome anymore
Weren't you the one who tried to break me with goodbye?
Do you think I'd crumble? Did you think I'd lay down and die?
Oh no, not I. I will survive
Oh as long as I know how to love I know I'll stay alive
I've got all my life to live
I've got all my love to give and I'll survive
I will survive, oh
Go on now go, walk out the door. Just turn around now
'Cause you're not welcome anymore
Weren't you the one who tried to break me with goodbye?
Do you think I'd crumble? Did you think I'd lay down and die?
Oh no, not I. I will survive
Oh as long as I know how to love
I know I'll stay alive
I've got all my life to live
I've got all my love to give and I'll survive
I will survive,
I will survive!

Chorus:]
I see you driving 'round town
With the girl I love and I'm like,
Forget you!

Wasn't enough I'm like,
Forget you!
And forget her too!
Said, if I was richer, I'd still be with ya
Ha, now ain't that some shh? (ain't that some shh?)
And although there's pain in my chest
I still wish you the best with a...
Forget you!

But that don't mean I can't get you there.
I guess he's an Xbox and I'm more Atari,
About the way you play your game ain't fair.

I pity the fool that falls in love with you
(Oh shit she's a gold digger)
Well
(Just thought you should know nigga)
Ooooooh

Yeah go run and tell your little boyfriend

[Chorus]
I see you driving 'round town
With the girl I love and I'm like,

Wasn't enough I'm like,
Forget you!
And forget her too!
Said, if I was richer, I'd still be with ya

And although there's pain in my chest

Now I know, that I had to borrow,
Beg and steal and lie and cheat.
Trying to keep ya, trying to please ya.
'Cause being in love with you ain't cheap.

I pity the fool that falls in love with you
(Oh shit she's a gold digger)
Well
(Just thought you should know nigga)
Ooooooh

Ooh, I really hate your ass right now

[Chorus]
I see you driving 'round town
With the girl I love and I'm like,

Why d'you wanna wanna hurt me so bad?
(So bad, so bad, so bad)
I tried to tell my momma but she told me
"This is one for your dad"
(Your dad, your dad, your dad)
Yes she did
And I was like
Uh! Whhhy? Uh! Whhhy? Uh!
Whhhy lady? Oh! I love you oh!
I still love you. Oooh!

[Chorus]
I see you driving 'round town
With the girl I love and I'm like,
Forget you!
Oo, oo, ooo
I guess the change in my pocket
Wasn't enough I'm like,
Forget you!
And forget her too!
Said, if I was richer, I'd still be with ya
Ha, now ain't that some shh? (ain't that some shh?)
And although there's pain in my chest
I still wish you the best with a...
Forget you!
Oo, oo, ooo

Here is another Cee-Lo Green video "Cry Baby"

eah, let me hold you
Don't cry baby

If this makes you cry, girl, I didn't mean it
Next time I should lie, the truth is inconvenient
I bet if you'd try, you could live without me
I really don't know why you bother to cry about me

Cry, cry baby, I guess that I'm a bad guy now
Cry, cry baby, just like all the other ones
Cry, cry baby, oh

I hate to see you cry, sad to say I've seen it
We should say goodbye and this time really mean it
Once some time goes by, I'm sure that you'll feel better
But if she needs to cry then maybe I should let her

Cry, cry baby, I guess that I'm a bad guy now
Cry, cry baby, just like all the other ones
Cry, cry baby, oh

And I'll help me cry away, yeah
What more can I say to you?

Cry, cry baby, I guess that I'm a bad guy now
Cry, cry baby, just like all the other ones
Cry, cry baby, you're the wall around the heart
Cry, cry baby, baby

Oh, cry, oh, oh, just like all the other ones
Oh, cry, oh, oh, just like all the other ones
Cry baby, cry, cry baby
I just wanna see you cry baby, cry baby
Oh, oh, don't cry baby

Bruno Mars

When I Was Your Man

Same bed but it feels just a little bit bigger now
Our song on the radio but it don't sound the same
When our friends talk about you, all it does is just tear me down
'Cause my heart breaks a little when I hear your name

It all just sounds like oooooh…
Mmm, too young, too dumb to realize
That I should've bought you flowers
And held your hand
Should've gave you all my hours
When I had the chance
Take you to every party
'Cause all you wanted to do was dance
Now my baby's dancing
But she's dancing with another man

My pride, my ego, my needs, and my selfish ways
Caused a good strong woman like you to walk out my life
Now I never, never get to clean up the mess I made, ohh…
And it haunts me every time I close my eyes

It all just sounds like oooooh…
Mmm, too young, too dumb to realize
That I should've bought you flowers
And held your hand
Should've gave you all my hours
When I had the chance
Take you to every party
'Cause all you wanted to do was dance
Now my baby's dancing
But she's dancing with another man

Although it hurts
I'll be the first to say that I was wrong
Oh, I know I'm probably much too late
To try and apologize for my mistakes
But I just want you to know

I hope he buys you flowers
I hope he holds your hand
Give you all his hours
When he has the chance
Take you to every party
'Cause I remember how much you loved to dance
Do all the things I should have done
When I was your man
Do all the things I should have done
When I was your man

John Legend

Here is the video for All of Me featuring John Legend and his wife, Kristi Teigan.

[Verse 1:]
What would I do without your smart mouth
Drawing me in, and you kicking me out
You've got my head spinning, no kidding, I can't pin you down
What's going on in that beautiful mind
I'm on your magical mystery ride
And I'm so dizzy, don't know what hit me, but I'll be alright

[Bridge:]
My head's under water
But I'm breathing fine
You're crazy and I'm out of my mind

[Chorus:]
'Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
I'll give my all to you
You're my end and my beginning
Even when I lose I'm winning
'Cause I give you all of me
And you give me all of you, oh

[Verse 2:]
How many times do I have to tell you
Even when you're crying you're beautiful too
The world is beating you down, I'm around through every mood
You're my downfall, you're my muse
My worst distraction, my rhythm and blues
I can't stop singing, it's ringing, in my head for you

[Bridge:]
My head's under water
But I'm breathing fine
You're crazy and I'm out of my mind

[Chorus:]
'Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
I'll give my all to you
You're my end and my beginning
Even when I lose I'm winning
'Cause I give you all of me
And you give me all of you, oh

Give me all of you
Cards on the table, we're both showing hearts
Risking it all, though it's hard

[Chorus:]
'Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
I'll give my all to you
You're my end and my beginning
Even when I lose I'm winning
'Cause I give you all of me
And you give me all of you

I give you all of me
And you give me all of you, oh

Ordinary People

[Verse 1]

Girl im in love with you
This ain't the honeymoon
Past the infatuation phase
Right in the thick of love
At times we get sick of love
It seems like we argue everyday

[Bridge]

I know i misbehaved
And you made your mistakes
And we both still got room left to grow
And though love sometimes hurts
I still put you first
And we'll make this thing work
But I think we should take it slow

[Chorus]

We're just ordinary people
We don't know which way to go
Cuz we're ordinary people
Maybe we should take it slow (Take it slow oh oh ohh)
This time we'll take it slow (Take it slow oh oh ohh)
This time we'll take it slow

[Verse 2]

This ain't a movie no
No fairy tale conclusion ya'll
It gets more confusing everyday
Sometimes it's heaven sent
Then we head back to hell again
We kiss then we make up on the way

[Bridge]

I hang up you call
We rise and we fall
And we feel like just walking away
As our love advances
We take second chances
Though it's not a fantasy
I Still want you to stay

[Chorus]

We're just ordinary people
We don't know which way to go
Cuz we're ordinary people
Maybe we should take it slow (Take it slow oh oh ohh)
This time we'll take it slow (Take it slow oh oh ohh)
This time we'll take it slow

[Verse 3]

Take it slow
Maybe we'll live and learn
Maybe we'll crash and burn
Maybe you'll stay, maybe you'll leave,
maybe you'll return
Maybe another fight
Maybe we won't survive
But maybe we'll grow
We never know baby youuuu and I

[Chorus]

We're just ordinary people
We don't know which way to go
Cuz we're ordinary people
Maybe we should take it slow (Heyyy)
We're just ordinary people
We don't know which way to go
Cuz we're ordinary people
Maybe we should take it slow (Take it slow oh oh ohh)
This time we'll take it slow (Take it slow oh oh ohh)
This time we'll take it slow

John Legend singing "This Time" live.

Ran into you yesterday
Memories rushed through my brain
It's starting to hit me, now you're not with me
I realized I made a mistake

I thought that I needed some space
But I just let love go to waste
It's so crystal clear now that I need you here now
I got to get you back today

This time I want it all, this time I want it all
Showing you all the cards, giving you all my heart
This time I'll take the chance, this time I'll be your man
I can be all you need, this time it's all of me

I hit the bar every night
Looking to score a good time
It's not like I planned it, I'm left empty handed
'Cause I'm still alone in my mind

Now what will it take to feel right
Can I come see you tonight?
Is there someone new now, what can I do now?
'Cause I need you back by my side

This time I want it all, this time I want it all
I'm showing you all the cards, giving you all my heart
This time I'll take the chance, this time I'll be your man
I can be all you need, this time is all of me

Last time I wasn't sure, this time I will give you more
I'm more mature, I'll show you
Last time I didn't know, I messed up and let you go
I need you, don't say no

Lying alone in this room
All that is missing is you
Pick up the phone
Won't you come home?

This time I want it all, this time I want it all
I'm showing you all the cards, giving you all my heart
This time I'll take the chance, this time I'll be your man
I can be all you need, this time is all of me, all of me, yeah

Here is John singing "If You're Out There" at the 2008 Democratic National Convention (where Barack Obama was nominated as the 2008 candidate for president)

If you hear this message
Wherever you stand
I'm calling every woman
Calling ever man

We're the generation
We can't afford to wait
The future started yesterday
And we're already late

We've been looking for a song to sing
Searched for a melody
Searched for someone to lead
We've been looking for the world to change
If you feel the same, well go on and say
If you're out there
Sing along with me if you're out there
I'm dying to believe that you're out there
Stand up and say it loud if you're out there
Tomorrow's starting now...now...now

No more broken promises
No more call to war
Unless it's Love and Peace that
We're really fighting for

We can destroy Hunger
We can conquer Hate
Put down the arms and raise your voice
We're joining hands today

I was looking for a song to sing
Searched for a leader
But the leader was me
We were looking for the world to change
We can be heroes
Just go on and say
If you're out there
Sing along with me if you're out there
I'm dying to believe that you're out there
Stand up and say it loud if you're out there
Tomorrow's starting now...now...now

Whoa now...now...now

If you ready we can save the world
Believe again, start to mend
We don't have to wait for destiny
We should be the change that we want to see
If you're out there

If you're out there
And you're ready now
Sing it loud, scream it out
If you're out there
Sing along with me if you're out there
I'm dying to believe that you're out there
Stand up and say it loud if you're out there
Tomorrow's starting now
If you're out there
If you're out there
If you're out there

If you hear this message
Wherever you stand
I'm calling every woman
Calling ever man

We're the generation
We can't afford to wait
The future started yesterday
And we're already late

Whitney Houston

(Whitney Houston died two years ago today. It is just a coincidence that I am writing this post on her anniversary.)

All the Man I Need

Here is the official video for this song:

I used to cry myself to sleep at night
But that was all before he came
I thought love had to hurt to turn out right
But now he's here
It's not the same, it's not the same

[Chorus:]
He fills me up
He gives me love
More love than I've ever seen
He's all I've got,
He's all I've got in this world
But he's all the man that I need

And in the morning when I kiss his eyes
He takes me down and rocks me slow
And in the evening when the moon is high
He holds me close and won't let go
He won't let go

[Chorus:]
He fills me up
He gives me love
More love than I've ever seen
He's all I've got,
He's all I've got in this world
But he's all the man that I need

Chorus repeat 2x

Here is Whitney singing live on Saturday Night Live

I Will Always Love You

This is Whitney singing live

If I should stay
I would only be in your way
So I'll go but I know
I'll think of you every step of the way

And I... will always love you, ooh
Will always love you
You
My darling, you...
Mmm-mm

Bittersweet memories –
That is all I'm taking with me.
So good-bye.
Please don't cry:
We both know I'm not what you, you need

And I... will always love you
I... will always love you
You, ooh

[Instrumental / Sax solo]

I hope life treats you kind
And I hope you have all you've dreamed of
And I wish you joy and happiness
But above all this I wish you love

And I... will always love you
I will always love you
I will always love you
I will always love you

I will always love you
I, I will always love you.

You.
Darling, I love you.
I'll always...
I'll always love you.
Ooh
Ooh

*******
This is Dolly Parton, a Country-Western singer, who wrote and originally performed "I Will Always Love You". It is very different from the way Whitney Houston sang the song.

Heartbreak Hotel

This song is a little more "urban" than the more popular Whitney Houston songs.

This is the heartbreak hotel [9x]
You said that you'd be here by nine
And said you took your time
You didn't think to call me boy
Here I sit trying not to cry
Asking myself why you do this to me

[Chorus 1 (sung by Faith Evans)]

Since you're not around for me to tell you baby face to face
I'm writing you this letter, and this is hat I have to say:
All I really wanted was some of your time
Instead you told me lies
When someone else was on your mind
What you do to me
Look what you did to me
I thought that you were someone who would do me right
Until you play with my emotions and you made me cry
What you do to me
Can't take what you did to me
Now I see that you been doing wrong
You played me all along.
And made a fool of me, baby
You got it all wrong to think that I wouldn't find out
That you were cheating on me.
How could you do it to me?

[Chorus 2 (sung by Kelly Price)]

This is the heartbreak hotel [9x]
Chorus and ad lib
I aint goin to take it no more [4x]
[Kelly Price] Everthing you said was a lie
Don't lie to me [fade out]

**********************************************

Singing ran in Whitney's family. Here is her mother Cissy Houston singing the Beatle's song "Yesterday".

This is Whitney's godmother, the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin

I Ain't Never Loved a Man

You're a no good heart breaker
You're a liar and you're a cheat
And I don't know why
I let you do these things to me
My friends keep telling me
That you ain't no good
But oh, they don't know
That I'd leave you if I could

I guess I'm uptight
And I'm stuck like glue
Cause I ain't never
I ain't never, I ain't never, no, no (loved a man)
(The way that I, I love you)

Some time ago I thought
You had run out of fools
But I was so wrong
You got one that you'll never lose
The way you treat me is a shame
How could ya hurt me so bad
Baby, you know that I'm the best thing
That you ever had
Kiss me once again

Don'cha never, never say that we we're through
Cause I ain't never
Never, Never, no, no (loved a man)
(The way that I, I love you)

I can't sleep at night
And I can't even fight
I guess I'll never be free
Since you got, your hooks, in me

Whoa, oh, oh
Yeah! Yeah!
I ain't never loved a man
I ain't never loved a man, baby
Ain't never had a man hurt me so bad

No
Well this is what I'm gonna do about it

********************************************************

And this is Whitney's cousin, Dionne Warwick

(It's a funny video, but great classic song.)

Walk On By

If you see me walking ddown the street
And i start to cry each time we meet
Walk on by
Walk on by
Make believe that you don't see the tears
Just let me grieve in private
Cause each time i see you i break down and cry
Walk on by.

I just can't get over losing you and so if i seem broken and blue
Walk on by
Walk on by
Foolish pride that's all that i have left
So let me hide the tears and the sadness you gave me when you said goodbye
Walk on by.

If you see me walking down the street and i start to cry each time we meet
Walk on by
Walk on by
Make believe that you don't see the tears
Just let me grieve in private
Cause each tim i see you i break down and cry
Walk on by

I just can't get over losing you an so if I seem broken and blue walk on by
Walk on by
Foolish pride is all I have left so let me hide
The tears and the sadness you gave me whe nyou said goodbye
Walk on by

Stevie Wonder

"You and I" with lyrics

Stevie Wonder singing "You and I" live (his voice is so smooth)

**************************************************************
Here is one of my favorite Stevie Wonder love songs. The lyrics go on and on, but basically he is just saying "I will always love you".

As around the sun the earth knows she's revolving
And the rosebuds know to bloom in early May
Just as hate knows love's the cure
You can rest your mind assure
That I'll be loving you always
As now can't reveal the mystery of tomorrow
But in passing we'll grow older every day
Just as all is born is new
Do know what I say is true
That I'll be loving you always

Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky---ALWAYS
Until the ocean covers every mountain high---ALWAYS
Until the dolphin flies and parrots live at sea---ALWAYS
Until we dream of life and life becomes a dream

Did you know that true love asks for nothing
Her acceptance is the way we pay
Did you know that life has given love a guarantee
To last through forever and another day
Just as time knew to move on since the beginning
And the seasons know exactly when to change
Just as kindness knows no shame
Know through all your joy and pain
That I'll be loving you always
As today I know I'm living but tomorrow
Could make me the past but that I mustn't fear
For I'll know deep in my mind
The love of me I've left behind 'cause I'll be loving you always

Until the day is night and night becomes the day---ALWAYS
Until the trees and seas just up and fly away---ALWAYS
Until the day that 8x8x8 is 4---ALWAYS
Until the day that is the day that are no more
Did you know that you're loved by somebody?
Until the day the earth starts turning right to left---ALWAYS
Until the earth just for the sun denies itself
I'll be loving you forever
Until dear Mother Nature says her work is through---ALWAYS
Until the day that you are me and I am you---AL~~~~~~WA~~
~~~~~AA~~~~~~~AA~~~~
Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky~~~~~AA~~~~
~~~~AA~~~~~~~AA~~~~~~~~~AA~~~~~~~YS~~ALWAYS

mmmmmm mmmmmm mmmmmmmm mmmmmmm

We all know sometimes life's hates and troubles
Can make you wish you were born in another time and space
But you can bet your life times that and twice its double
That God knew exactly where he wanted you to be placed
so make sure when you say you're in it but not of it
You're not helping to make this earth a place sometimes called Hell
Change your words into truths and then change that truth into love
And maybe our children's grandchildren
And their great-great grandchildren will tell
I'll be loving you

Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky--Loving you
Until the ocean covers every mountain high--Loving you
Until the dolphin flies and parrots live at sea--Loving you
Until we dream of life and life becomes a dream--Be loving you
Until the day is night and night becomes the day--Loving you
Until the trees and seas up, up and fly away--Loving you
Until the day that 8x8x8x8 is 4--Loving you
Until the day that is the day that are no more--Loving you
Until the day the earth starts turning right to left--Be loving you
Until the earth just for the sun denies itself--Loving you
Until dear Mother Nature says her work is through--Loving you
Until the day that you are me and I am you--
Now ain't that loving you
Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky
Ain't that loving you
Until the ocean covers every mountain high
And I've got to say always
Until the dolphin flies and parrots live at sea~~AL~~~WA~~~AYS
Until we dream of life and life becomes a dream-Um AL~~WA~~AYS
Until the day is night and night becomes the day-AL~~~~WA~~AYS
Until the trees and seas just up and fly away-AL~~WA~~~AA~~~~~
Until the day that 8x8x8 is 4~~~~~AA~~~~~~~AA~~~~~~~AA
Until the day that is the day that are no more-AA~~~~AA~~AA~~~AYS
Until the day the earth starts turning right to left-AL~~~WA~~~A~~~AA
Until the earth just for the sun denies itself-~~AA~~~AA~~~AA~~~AYS
Until dear Mother Nature says her work is through-AL~~~WAYS
Until the day that you are me and I am you
Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky
Until the ocean covers every mountain high
Until the dolphin flies and parrots live at sea
Until we dream of life and life becomes a dream
Until the day is night and night becomes the day
Until the trees and seas just up and fly away
Until the day that 8x8x8 is 4
Until the day that is the day that are no more
Until the day the earth starts turning right to left
Until the earth just for the sun denies itself
Until dear Mother Nature says her work is through
Until the day that you are me and I am you

Another beautiful love song by Stevie Wonder - "Ribbon in the Sky"

Oh so long for this night I prayed
That a star would guide you my way
To share with me this special day
Where a ribbon's in the sky for our love

If allowed may I touch your hand
And if pleased may I once again
So that you too will understand
There's a ribbon in the sky for our love

Do...Do...
Do Do Do Do Do...
HMM HMM...

This is not a coincidence
And far more than a lucky chance
But what is that was always meant
Is our ribbon in the sky for our love, love

We can't lose with God on our side
We'll find strength in each tear we cry
From now on it will be you and I
And our ribbon in the sky
Ribbon in the sky
A ribbon in the sky for our love

Do...Do...
Do Do Do Do Do...
HMM HMM...

[Musical Break]

There's a ribbon in the sky for our love

This song "Higher Ground" is not a love song. It is a song telling people to do what they need until they reach a higher level of consciousness - a "higher ground".

Here is a modern version made with musicians from around the world through Playing For Change.

People keep on learnin'
Soldiers keep on warrin'
World keep on turnin'
Cause it won't be too long

Powers keep on lyin'
While your people keep on dyin'
World keep on turnin'
Cause it won't be too long

I'm so darn glad he let me try it again
Cause my last time on earth I lived a whole world of sin
I'm so glad that I know more than I knew then
Gonna keep on tryin'
Till I reach my highest ground

Teachers keep on teachin'
Preachers keep on preachin'
World keep on turnin'
Cause it won't be too long
Oh no

Lovers keep on lovin'
Believers keep on believin'
Sleepers just stop sleepin'
Cause it won't be too long
Oh no

I'm so glad that he let me try it again
Cause my last time on earth I lived a whole world of sin
I'm so glad that I know more than I knew then
Gonna keep on tryin'
Till I reach my highest ground...Whew!

Till I reach my highest ground
No one's gonna bring me down
Oh no
Till I reach my highest ground
Don't let nobody bring you down (they'll sho 'nuff try)
God is gonna show you higher ground
He's the only friend you have around

The Rising Up of Motown

This is a six part documentary from the BBC about the rise of Motown and the man who started it, Berry Gordy. This is part 1, but if you watch it on You Tube, you will see the next part come up after this finishes.

The Motown Sound

Motown came out of Detroit, "the Motor City". This was "crossover" music, black music that appealed to white audiences. It came from the tradition of spirituals, blues and jazz, but the music was more upbeat, happier, and more "pop". Many famous groups came out of Motown, including The Supremes (and Diana Ross), The Jackson 5 (and Michael and Janet Jackson), Gladys Knight and the Pips, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas and Stevie Wonder. Motown was a classic sound that many people still enjoy today.

Here is Diana Ross and the Supremes singing "I Hear a Symphony". This was a live recording and Diana made a mistake at the beginning of the song.

You've given me a true love
And every day I thank you, love
For a feeling that's so new
So inviting, so exciting

Whenever you're near, I hear a symphony
A tender melody
Pulling me closer, closer to your arms
Then suddenly (I hear a symphony)
Ooh, your lips are touching mine
A feeling so divine
Till I leave the past behind

I'm lost in a world
Made for you and me

Whenever you're near, I hear a symphony
Play sweet and tenderly
Every time your lips meet mine, now, baby, baby, baby
You bring much joy within
Don't let this feeling end
Let it go on and on and on, now, baby, baby, baby
Those tears that fill my eyes
I cry not for myself
But for those who've never felt the joy we felt (baby)

Whenever you're near, I hear a symphony
Each time you speak to me
I hear a tender rhapsody of love now, baby, baby
As you stand holding me
Whispering how much you care
A thousand violins fill the air, now, baby, baby
Don't let this moment end
Keep standing close to me
Ooh, so close to me, baby, baby, baby, baby
I hear a symphony

Here is The Jackson 5 with little Michael Jackson singing the lead.

You went to school to learn girl
Things you never, never knew before
Like "I" before "E" except after "C"
And why 2 plus 2 makes 4
Now, now, now
I'm gonna teach you
Teach you, teach you
All about love girl
All about love
Sit yourself down, take a seat
All you gotta do is repeat after me

A B C
It's easy as, 1 2 3
As simple as, do re mi
A B C, 1 2 3
Baby, you and me girl
A B C
It's easy as, 1 2 3
As simple as, do re mi
A B C, 1 2 3
Baby, you and me girl

Come on and love me just a little bit
Come on and love me just a little bit
I'm gonna teach you how to sing it out
Come on, come on, come on
Let me tell you what it's all about
Reading, writing, arithmatic
Are the branches of the learning tree
But without the roots of love everyday girl
Your education ain't complete
Tea-Tea-Teacher's gonna show you
(She's gonna show you)
How to get an "A" (na-na-na-naaaaaa)
How to spell "me", "you", add the two
Listen to me, baby
That's all you got to do

Oh, A B C
It's easy as, 1 2 3
As simple as, do re mi
A B C, 1 2 3
Baby, you and me girl
A B C it's easy,
It's like counting up to 3
Sing a simple melody
That's how easy love can be
That's how easy love can be
Sing a simple melody
1 2 3 baby
You and me

Sit down girl,
I think I love ya'
No, get up girl
Show me what you can do
Shake it, shake it baby, come on now
Shake it, shake it baby, oooh, oooh
Shake it, shake it baby, yeah
1 2 3 baby, oooh oooh
A B C baby, ah, ah
Do re mi baby, wow
That's how easy love can be
A B C it's easy
It's like counting up to 3
Sing a simple melody
That's how easy love can be
I'm gonna teach you
How to sing it out
Come-a, come-a, come-a
Let me show you what's it's all about
A B C it's easy
It's like counting up to 3
Sing a simple melody
That's how easy love can be

I'm gonna teach you
How to sing it out
Sing it out, sing it out
Sing it, sing it
A B C it's easy
It's like counting up to 3
Sing a simple melody
That's how easy love can be

Here are The Temptations singing "I Wish It Would Rain" - a good song for us in California with our drought (and rain).

Sunshine, blue sky, please go away,
My girl has found another, and gone away
With her went my future, my life is filled with gloom,
So day after day, I stay locked up in my room

I know to you it might sound strange,
But I wish it would rain (oh how I wish that it would rain)
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah

Hurt so badly
I wanna go outside (such a lovely day)
Everyone knows that a man ain't supposed to cry
Listen, I got to cry, cuz crying, just,
Eaaessee the pain, oh yeah
To the world outside my tears, I refuse to explain
I just wish it would rain (oh how i wish that it would rain)
Oh let it rain, rain, rain, rain (oh how i wish that it would rain)
Ooooooh baby
Let it rain (rain, rain)
Oh yeah, let it rain

Day in day out, my tear stained face
Pressed against my window pane
My eyes search the skies, well, desperately for rain
Cause rain drops will hide my teardrops and no one will ever know
That I'm crying (crying) crying (crying)
When I go outside

To the world outside my tears I refuse to explain,
I wish it would rain (oh how I wish that it would rain)
Rain, rain, rain (oh how I wish that it would rain)
ooooh baby

Let it rain
I need rain to disguise the tears in my eyes
Yeah, You know I'm a man, I ain't got no pride,
Til it rains, I'm gonna stay inside,
Let it rain, Let it rain
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah...
Oh how I wish that it would rain...

Here is Martha and the Vandellas singing "Dancing in the Street" - when black riots started to break out in cities like Detroit, Philadelphia and San Francisco, radio stations were told they could not play this song. The government thought that the song was telling black people to go out into the streets and riot. There was no secret message intended. This song was just about dancing and having fun.

Callin' out around the world
Are you ready for a brand new beat?
Summer's here and the time is right
For dancin' in the streets

They're dancin' in Chicago
Down in New Orleans
Up in New York City

All we need is music, sweet music
There'll be music everywhere
There'll be swingin', swayin' and records playin'
And dancin' in the streets

Oh, it doesn't matter what you wear
Just as long as you are there
So come on, every guy grab a girl
Everywhere around the world

There'll be dancin'
They're dancin' in the street

This is an invitation across the nation
A chance for the folks to meet
There'll be laughin' and singin' and music swingin'
And dancin' in the streets

Philadelphia, PA
(Philadelphia, PA)
Baltimore and DC now
(Baltimore and DC now)
Yeah, don't forget the Motor City
(Can't forget the Motor City)

All we need is music, sweet music
There'll be music everywhere
There'll be swingin', swayin' and records playin'
And dancin' in the street, yeah

Oh, it doesn't matter what you wear
Just as long as you are there
So come on, every guy grasp a girl
Everywhere around the world

There'll be dancin'
They're dancin' in the streets

Philadelphia, PA
(Philadelphia, PA)
Baltimore and DC now
(Baltimore and DC now)
Yeah, don't forget the Motor City
(Can't forget the Motor City)

All the way down in LA, California
Not to mention Halifax, Nova Scotia, Manchester
Alexandria, Virginia, Virginia

Playing for Change

Here is something uplifting for you to enjoy. Playing for Change is an organization that unites musicians around the world. They use the money they make from selling albums and concert tickets to build music schools in poor countries. This song is not in English, but I think you can still understand the power of music. You can look at their website http://www.playingforchange.org for more music.

Why I Sing the Blues

Here is blues legend BB King singing " Why I Sing the Blues" in a superstar spectacular jam session with Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Albert King, Phil Collins, Dr John, Etta James, Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, Paul Butterfield and Billy Ocean.

Here is a recorded version:

Everybody wants to know
Why I sing the blues
Yes, I say everybody wanna know
Why I sing the blues
Well, I've been around a long time
I really have paid my dues

When I first got the blues
They brought me over on a ship
Men were standing over me
And a lot more with a whip
And everybody wanna know
Why I sing the blues
Well, I've been around a long time
Mm, I've really paid my dues

I've laid in a ghetto flat
Cold and numb
I heard the rats tell the bedbugs
To give the roaches some
Everybody wanna know
Why I'm singing the blues
Yes, I've been around a long time
People, I've paid my dues

I stood in line
Down at the County Hall
I heard a man say, "We're gonna build
Some new apartments for y'all"
And everybody wanna know
Yes, they wanna know
Why I'm singing the blues
Yes, I've been around a long, long time
Yes, I've really, really paid my dues

Now I'm gonna play Lucille.

My kid's gonna grow up
Gonna grow up to be a fool
'Cause they ain't got no more room
No more room for him in school
And everybody wanna know
Everybody wanna know
Why I'm singing the blues
I say I've been around a long time
Yes, I've really paid some dues

Yeah, you know the company told me
Guess you're born to lose
Everybody around me, people
It seems like everybody got the blues
But I had 'em a long time
I've really, really paid my dues
You know I ain't ashamed of it, people
I just love to sing my blues

I walk through the cities, people
On my bare feet
I had a fill of catfish and chitterlings
Up and down Beale Street
You know I'm singing the blues
Yes, I really
I just have to sing my blues
I've been around a long time
People, I've really, really paid my dues

Now Father Time is catching up with me
Gone is my youth
I look in the mirror everyday
And let it tell me the truth
I'm singing the blues
Mm, I just have to sing the blues
I've been around a long time
Yes, yes, I've really paid some dues

Yeah, they told me everything
Would be better out in the country
Everything was fine
I caught me a bus uptown, baby
And every people, all the people
Got the same trouble as mine
I got the blues, huh huh
I say I've been around a long time
I've really paid some dues

One more time, fellows!

Blind man on the corner
Begging for a dime
The rollers come and caught him
And throw him in the jail for a crime
I got the blues
Mm, I'm singing my blues
I've been around a long time
Mm, I've really paid some dues

Can we do just one more?

Oh I thought I'd go down to the welfare
To get myself some grits and stuff
But a lady stand up and she said
"You haven't been around long enough"
That's why I got the blues
Mm, the blues
I say, I've been around a long time
I've really, really paid my dues

Fellows, tell them one more time.

Ha, ha, ha. That's all right, fellows.
Yeah!

Oh Happy Day from Sister Act 2

This is a very inspiring Gospel song that was performed in the movie, Sister Act 2. It starred Whoopie Goldberg and Lauryn Hill. Parts of this movie were filmed at Civic Center Campus! Watch the movie, you will see the outside of our building!

Follow the Drinking Gourd

This is an example of a "Negro Spiritual" that was actually a road map to freedom. The song gives clear directions to slaves who wanted to escape.

Sweet Honey in the Rock - Wade in the Water

Here is a very well known Negro Spiritual - "Wade in the Water". The message for slaves was to walk in the river so that the dogs would not be able to follow their scent if they ran away. Slave owners did not understand the secret message.

Here is another version of "Wade in the Water" with a very nice slideshow showing some illustrations of slavery. Music was something that helped people ease the pain.

At the end of the slideshow is a quote by Frederick Douglass "The thing worse than rebellion is the thing that causes rebellion". What do you think he meant?

Swing Low Sweet Chariot

This version is sung by Etta James

Chorus:
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Comin' for to carry me home;
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Comin' for to carry me home.

1.
I looked over Jordan,
And what did I see,
Comin' for to carry me home,
A band of angels comin' after me,
Comin' for to carry me home.

(Chorus)

2.
If you get there before I do,
Comin' for to carry me home,
Tell all my friends I'm a comin' too,
Comin' for to carry me home.

(Chorus)

3.
I'm on the upward heavenly way,
Comin' for to carry me home,
Since Jesus washed my sins away,
Comin' for to carry me home.

(Chorus)

Repeat

Coming for to carry me....

Here is Beyonce from the film "The Fighting Temptations" singing Swing Low Sweet Chariot

Here are the Plantation Singers, an a capella group from South Carolina.
